Keeping It Local

At Jackson's General Store, we proudly offer a variety of grass-fed, corn-finished meat options.  The selection includes several different cuts of beef, pork, lamb, rabbit and chicken.  Turkey will be stocked seasonally. All animals are raised on pasture and are free of antibiotics and hormones. The cows and lamb are grass-fed until a couple weeks prior to slaughter, at which point they are put on corn silage to enhance marbling of the meat and achieve better flavor. The pigs are also pasture-raised but offered free-choice grain as their metabolic needs are different than cows.  They, 90% of the time, prefer the grass or hay over grain though! Animals are processed solely through a USDA facility after being raised with care and compassion right here in New York State.

Jackson's General store is currently partnering with several local businesses and artisans to provide more than just delicious meat!  We offer handmade crafts, stitchery, cornbags, candles and blankets, as well as locally harvested syrups and honey products! Our shelves are also stocked with jams, sauces, goat milk products, delicious coffees and ice creams homemade by local businesses.

Back To The

Good Ole' Days

Jackson's General Store was envisioned to have the Good Ole' Days feel with the intent of taking you back to the days of General Stores with beautiful wood floors, large sales counters, penny candy and local fare.  We want to get to know everyone by name, be a place to purchase good ole' down-home products and bring some life back to Main Street, in our beloved little town of Windsor NY.

Our Meats

All beef stocked in our freezers has been pasture-raised with room to roam and live freely.  Jackson's Farm and Bedient Farm heifers are Shorthorn, Hereford and Angus breeds crossed with Angus, Hereford, and Shorthorn bulls resulting in small-framed calves that finish well on a primarily grass-based diet. The beef is raised to be two years of age before being processed with a hanging weight typically ranging between 750-800lb.

The pork is raised from heritage lines combined with modern genetics to increase hardiness and aide in pasture grazing. Homestead Hogs Farm is home to a variety of breeds such as Berkshire, Hereford, Yorkshire and Gloucestershire Old Spots, with other breeds periodically being added. These pigs generally weight around 200 lb. at butchering.

We pride ourselves on overall consistency and quality, ensuring all animals are fed and treated with respect and attention given to their needs.  This allows for us to continually provide our customers with the same amazing product every time you shop.

Jackson's General Store is partnered with Bedient Farms and Homestead Hogs, combining many generations of farming and meat processing experience and bringing that knowledge directly to your table.

About us...

A story of "Why not?!"

Chris Jackson and Amanda Swartz, went to high school together in Windsor NY.  Even though their class was small, they never crossed paths until years later.

Chris learned a trade and became a mechanic for anything and everything.   He has traveled and worked in NY, Virginia, West Virginia, Carolinas... as far west as Texas.

Amanda graduated High School with a Regents Diploma and spent roughly 15 years in the corporate world working in different finance positions, before deciding to go out on a limb and try something different.

Chris and Amanda met up in 2013, engaged a year later, and married a year after that, in August of 2015.  Because... why not!?  They complimented and supported each other so perfectly, it seemed silly to wait!

Chris grew up on a beef farm and Amanda was always at a barn with horses as a kid.  So when they got married and bought a little piece of land, they decided to get their own operation going.  Why not?!

So, they put in the fence and bought some cows, ducks, chickens, geese... a little bit of everything.  Even a couple ponies and donkeys.  (Why not!?)

As we all know, when the COVID pandemic began in March of 2020, the whole world changed. There were meat shortages in the stores and people were nervous.  Chris and Amanda would typically sell half cows and pigs throughout the year and found themselves unable to keep up with demand, but also unable to sell to some customers.  Some people didn't have the money for a half cow, or a place to store that much meat. So the idea was born, to raise quality meat and sell it by the piece.

Amanda lost her job as a result of the pandemic.  She was feeling a little lost, not ever having been unemployed since she started working as a teenager.  Chris encouraged her to, one step at a time, figure out what they'd need to do to open a retail store. (Why not!?)

A few months later, lots of research and networking, the freezers were stocked and the doors opened!

And that is how Jackson's General Store came to be.  And with the loyalty of local vendors and customers alike, we hope to be sticking around a bit.
